Dream bigger: Get started with Generative Fill, powered by Adobe Firefly Generative AI now in Photoshop
A live preview that’s created automatically shows you instantly how the changes you make affect your image. I started with this unremarkable smartphone vacation image above on the left, that I would usually throw away. I first generated a new sky, a snowy mountain, a castle in the style of Alhambra, a boat, and adjusted the colors and lighting a little using the traditional Photoshop adjustment tools. I then generated a reflection of the sky in the lake, which I found surprisingly good.
The latest Lumix puts a Four Thirds sensor in a full-frame body, and includes some of Panasonic’s most advanced imaging tech ever. In my experience, it sometimes works well, and sometimes it’s unusable. Hopefully this offers a more consistent option (I don’t doubt it does).
Common questions about generative AI features in Photoshop
With generative AI, computers detect the underlying pattern related to the input and produce similar content. This is in contrast to most other AI techniques where the AI model attempts to solve a problem which has a single answer (e.g. a classification or prediction problem). All you have to do is upload an image and select the style of art you want to apply to it. You can also create layers or add personal touches quickly and easily. The tool doesn’t require you to create an account to use the software or download the artworks.
These capabilities are now generally available to all free and paid Creative
Cloud members. With Generative Recolor in Adobe Illustrator, powered by Adobe Firefly, you can explore color palettes and themes with simple text prompts. Expand the canvas of your image, then select the empty region and apply Generative Fill.

Anders Hoff (a.k.a. inconvergent on Twitter) is a generative artist who is fascinated by patterns. He often finds it useful to start with a highly organized structure and to then look for ways to gradually Yakov Livshits disrupt it. - Katharina Brunner is a generative artist and data journalist whose GitHub repository on Generative Art is a great resource for anyone looking to get started using the programming language R.
- Of course, if you’re extending an image of a real location, the software doesn’t know the particulars of the landscape; it’s still only making informed machine-learning guesses about what should appear in the new areas.
- For example, if you generate an image of a dog, select the area around it, then tell Photoshop to make the dog bigger, it will likely result in an entirely different picture of a dog rather than a bigger version of the original one.

Adobe has over a decade-long history of AI innovation, delivering hundreds of intelligent capabilities through Adobe Sensei into applications that hundreds of millions of people rely upon. Firefly, Adobe’s family of creative generative AI models, now brings even more precision, power, speed and ease directly into workflows where content is created or modified. Combining photos is another great way to use Photoshop AI’s generative fill feature. We’ll show you an example with two video game character images created in Midjourney. We’ll start by creating a blank canvas measuring 1800px by 1024px. Then we’ll import the first image into your canvas by clicking the import button on the contextual taskbar.

A white delivery van in a night scene was appropriately yellowish to match the sodium vapor streetlights in the scene. If you don’t like the trio of results Firefly presents, you can click the “generate” button to get another batch. With Firefly technology, including what’s produced by Photoshop’s generative fill, “you may not use the output for any commercial purpose,” Adobe’s generative AI beta rules state. Such technologies have been emerging over the last year as Stable Diffusion, Midjourney and OpenAI’s Dall-E captured the imaginations of artists and creative pros.
Generative AI in Photoshop reshapes the way you create and combine images, dramatically accelerating your workflows and adding a lot more fun to the creative process. Simply make a selection, hit generate, and create as many options as you want. You can generate with or without adding text to the prompt. Generative Fill automatically matches the perspective, lighting, and style of your image to make previously time-consuming tasks swift and delivers results that are truly mind-blowing and delightful. One thing that Photoshop AI doesn’t do well is determining instructional prompts. Avoid using words like create, alter, or make when inputting your text prompts.
That being said, as an amateur photographer I don’t think that this kind of functionality is truly essential in any shape or form because this ain’t photography anymore but creative image generation. So much for “stock photos” — those can just be synthesized from the huge database of photos it has seen. Now you will pay a subscription fee rather than royalties, and none of that will go to photographers… Yes, photographers have always lied, but again, never so easily, so extensively, and so convincingly. I’m sure you understand there’s a difference between adding a filter on your lens and creating skies and people out of the blue, or creating picture of places you’ve never been to. I don’t have this type of software yet, but when I get it I will label any pictures that I significantly alter as such.
Rao argues that such a law would provide a right of action to an artist against those who misuse AI tools to compete directly against them in the marketplace using their style or identity. He also says that Adobe has trained its generative AI model Firefly only on licensed, public domain, moderated or openly licensed content to minimize the risk of style impersonation. Instead, I will wait until free tools such as stable diffusion get more refined and modifed in order be applicable to photographs in a similar way (and quality) as Adobe’s generativ fill function.
Adobe enters a new creative age with AI technology
This week, Adobe officially launched its Firefly suite of generative AI tools, and incorporates several AI tools into Creative Cloud – but users will need to pay for performance with ‘credits’. Late last year, Panasonic’s trusty standard F2.8 zoom got a Leica makeover for its 10th birthday. Check out some fresh sample photos and see how the image quality looks. These capable cameras should be solid and well-built, have both the speed and focus to capture fast action and offer professional-level image quality. In this buying guide we’ve rounded up all the current interchangeable lens cameras costing around $2000 and recommended the best. Tapping into machine learning technologies, Photomator is a photo editor that offers a step up from Apple Photos and an affordable alternative to Lightroom.
